Pierre Gasly doesn’t know his best start to the F1 season. The Frenchman has only scored points twice in the first four races (in Jeddah and Melbourne) with his best result being an eighth-place finish in Saudi Arabia. Worse still, Gasly is behind his teammate Yuki Tsunoda in the standings (10 points compared to 6). Gasly is also not helped by an AlphaTauri that seems slightly less competitive than last year when the Normandy-born driver achieved his third career podium in Baku.

In Imola, Gasly spent the majority of his race stuck between Alex Albon’s Williams, which was slowing him down, and Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes, who wanted to overtake him. It was a frustrating race for the former Red Bull driver, as he couldn’t make a comeback and get into the points.

« It was pretty much the entire race with a Mercedes in my rearview mirror and Alex Albon’s car in front. I tried everything but even with the DRS, we couldn’t catch up to that Williams, so yes, it’s quite frustrating… but we know that when you start from the back, it’s always difficult.

» Gasly regrets, starting seventeenth on the grid.

The Normand regrets a missed qualification, an exercise that was nevertheless his strength last year. We had very good performances in qualifications until this weekend, where unfortunately we did not perform well, which means that we were behind from Friday. We need to figure out how to get back to a better performance in qualifying for the next race, he laments.

Nevertheless, Gasly doesn’t lose hope for the next race in Miami. « Yes, of course [I hope things will go better in Miami]. Every time we were alone on the track, we were competitive. We knew that on this track, it is extremely difficult to overtake and [on Sunday] we paid the price for it. », regrets Gasly.

The Frenchman, whose future is still uncertain, will have to perform quickly in order to hope to find a seat in a better team next year.
