While Charles Leclerc is fighting for victories alongside Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz seems to be struggling more than his Monegasque teammate. After a very good season last year in his first year with the Reds, the Spanish driver is making a series of mistakes at the beginning of this season. Even for his home Grand Prix this weekend on the Barcelona circuit, Sainz spun out during the race.

A mistake that Verstappen quickly imitated. Even though the area was tricky, it was still a mistake.

Relegated to 39 points behind Leclerc after six races, Sainz appears clearly less comfortable with the F1-75. Is it a car less suited to his driving style or too much pressure? Surely a combination of both. Regardless, the Spanish driver is experiencing multiple breakdowns in these early season races.

Keep your head down.

The native of Madrid admits it himself. « It has given me a whole new challenge in my Formula 1 career and I have to think outside the box. With this kind of mistakes, it’s about learning the things I need to learn, putting my head down to try and find them, and trying to correct them as quickly as possible. There has been a combination of bad luck and errors on my part, which also matters. But I think that in the future, it will change suddenly or little by little, and I just have to keep my head down. »

The Spanish driver also admits to having more difficulties with this F1-75. « I think you can see from the cameras and everywhere that I am not yet comfortable with the car compared to last year. I don’t naturally drive, the car is a bit too sharp for my taste. But that’s it, that’s how it is. You can adapt or you can bring the car more to your liking. These two things take time, knowledge, and experience, making mistakes, doing trials and errors. »

It must be admitted, for the Madrilenian, that Charles Leclerc is much better mastering his subject, at the beginning of the season. He accumulates super impressive laps, he remains aggressive in his way of driving, I can only admire and, in some ways, copy and in others try to add a little more to my liking to be faster, that’s all.

Despite a pace that is far from shameful, Carlos Sainz will have to correct his mistakes in order to compete with his teammate and contend for the title at the end of the year. Otherwise, he will have to rely on race events to be in the forefront.
