Some teams that are over budget could miss the end of the season

According to Horner, the budget cap could prevent certain teams from participating in the final races of the season.

Since last season, a budget cap has been implemented in Formula 1. The aim is to limit the excessive spending of top teams, in order to give smaller teams a fair chance. Set at €141.2 million for the 2022 season, it greatly restricts the extravagant spending of large teams.

But this limit could backfire on her, as some teams would struggle to comply with it at the end of the season. A fear that can be explained in particular by the constant increase in travel costs.

On his side, Christian Horner is very pessimistic and believes that teams could miss races at the end of the season. « I think we need the FIA to solve the inflation problem. Because I believe that around seven teams will probably have to miss the last four races in order to stay within the limits this year, based on the consensus in the paddock. »

“It’s not just about the top teams,” adds Horner, “it’s the midfield teams that are really struggling with the inflation we’re witnessing and it could even worsen in the second half of the year.”

Horner is therefore asking the FIA to take action, particularly by increasing this budget cap. « I believe that the FIA has a duty of care in such a situation. I know they take all of this seriously because, as I said, we are almost at a point where, for some teams, based on the figures that were presented earlier in the week, they would have to miss a few Grand Prix in order to stay close to the limits. »

I think that nobody wants to find themselves in this situation, and that’s why I believe that during the second half of the year, the FIA must address the problem, because we are witnessing things like energy bills or simply the cost of living increasing exponentially.
