Mercedes doesn’t expect a major achievement in Monaco

After a promising Spanish Grand Prix, Toto Wolff does not expect any surprises in Monaco this weekend.

Last weekend in Barcelona, Mercedes made many developments to address the issues with the W13. Without yet being back in the title fight, the Silver Arrows appeared much more comfortable and showcased a more than acceptable pace, just like Lewis Hamilton’s impressive comeback.

However, on the eve of the start of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, Mercedes is being cautious about the performance of the W13 on the streets of the principality. When asked about the team’s optimism for another very good result this weekend, Toto Wolff doesn’t get carried away. « I wouldn’t say that because we have been particularly slow this weekend [in Barcelona] in the slow corners of the final sector, due to overheating. »

“It will be different in Monaco,” Wolff continues, “but Monaco wasn’t our best place in the past. Maybe because the car was the size of an elephant. But I would be curious to see where we stand this weekend. […] My expectations for Monaco are lower than on any other circuit. I’m not sure I can scientifically explain why. But it will be another learning point, at least to get us back in the game.”

Before even joining the battle between Ferrari and Red Bull this weekend, Mercedes will have to be wary of Alfa Romeo, as the Monaco circuit seems to perfectly suit the C42.
