McLaren doesn’t know where they stand before the Monaco Grand Prix

On the eve of the start of the Monaco Grand Prix, Andreas Seidl doesn't know where to place his McLaren team in the field. This is due to a more than particular track.

After a disastrous first Grand Prix in Bahrain, McLaren managed to come back stronger. With a podium finish by Lando Norris at Imola during the third race of the season, the Woking team is now fourth in the constructors’ championship with 50 points before the seventh race of the year.

And this seventh Grand Prix is undoubtedly the most unique of all. This weekend, the paddock is settling in the Principality of Monaco. Faced with such an atypical track, McLaren is not really sure where they stand in the pack. Especially since the team right behind them, Alfa Romeo, plans to be very comfortable on this track with a lot of slow turns, a major strength of Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou’s car.

Andreas Seidl, the team principal, prefers not to make predictions. Monaco is such a special track that it is always difficult to predict how you will perform. Even last year, for example, when we had a car that struggled with low speeds compared to others, we were able to fight for a top-four position in qualifying and even managed to secure a podium finish in the race.

« It’s such a unique track that with these brand new cars, it’s probably even more difficult to predict what’s going to happen,” adds Seidl, who hopes that his two drivers, who have already performed here, will repeat a good performance. « A lot of things obviously come from the drivers on this track where Daniel has achieved good results in the past, Lando has always been strong here too. I suppose we can approach it with cautious optimism, but at the same time, we all start from scratch on Friday morning and wait to see how things unfold.
