Zhou, an anonymous race marked by a scare at the chicane

Rather discreet during this Monaco Grand Prix, Guanyu Zhou was mainly marked by a big scare at the port chicane when he tried to overtake Yuki Tsunoda.

For his first Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, Guanyu Zhou was quite discreet. Without being flamboyant, the rookie also did not fall victim to the very difficult conditions on the circuit of the principality. Unfortunately, the qualifying session largely ended his weekend. Qualifying last on the grid, partly due to the chaos caused by the red flag with 2 minutes left in Q1, Zhou had to wait for a miracle to hope for something in the race.

Like Gasly, the rain was probably good news for him, as it gave the opportunity to shake things up. However, the Chinese driver failed to take advantage of it and finished in a nondescript 16th place for his first race in Monaco in a Formula 1 car.

A race also marked by a big scare at the braking point of the harbor chicane. On lap 50, Zhou is behind Tsunoda. Positioned very well in the tunnel, the Chinese driver moves to attempt a braking move on the AlphaTauri at the chicane. However, in the less dry part of the track, Zhou narrowly avoids losing control after a huge slide.

“It wasn’t so cool in the cockpit, it was rather scary at the time,” he declared after the race. “It will be nice to watch the replay. Obviously, it was very wet inside and there wasn’t much suction. So it was probably the time I was closest to Yuki, so I really had to dive inside at the last minute.”

The Chinese driver then had fun with it on his Twitter account, declaring that he “needed a new pair of pants.”
