Russell is surprised that his overtake on Norris was not shown
After another top 5 finish in Monaco, George Russell was surprised to discover that his overtaking move on Lando Norris was not shown during the race.
Author of a seventh top 5 in as many races in 2022, George Russell is undoubtedly a big satisfaction for Mercedes. Still strong in the treacherous conditions of Monaco this Sunday, the young British driver impresses and seems to have been in this car for years as he is consistent.
Qualifying sixth behind Lando Norris, George Russell managed to overtake the McLaren driver on lap 23 to continue his fantastic streak of top 5 finishes. With Norris coming out of the pits, Russell decided to take a wider line into the first corner to have better traction on exit. As they approached Massenet and the Casino, the Mercedes moved ahead of the McLaren. A nice move by Russell that wasn’t shown on television as the focus was on Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, with the Dutchman exiting the pits just ahead of the Monegasque driver.
“They didn’t show my overtake on Lando, which was a bit disappointing,” declares Russell after the race. “He came out of the pits just ahead of me, and I managed to overtake him on the wet part. It was quite risky from inside the car for Monaco in wet conditions, but obviously it wasn’t good enough for the TV coverage. So, next time!”
On his part, Lando Norris downplays his compatriot’s overtaking move. If that was a mega overtaking move, then he has made some sh*t overtakes. I mean, I just came into the pits on wet tires. And he obviously gained a lap ahead because he was on slicks, the tires to be on. He had warm tires, mine were cold. And he passed me, it’s very simple. I wasn’t impressed at all. I was more frustrated.
A slight frustration for both drivers, one because his overtake was not broadcasted, the other because he lost a position. Nevertheless, Lando Norris and George Russell are among the drivers having an excellent start to the season.
