Jacques Villeneuve: Ricciardo’s career is over
Jacques Villeneuve spoke to Formule1.nl to discuss Daniel Ricciardo's difficult situation at McLaren, as his contract is set to end at the end of the season. The former 1997 world champion did not hold back and declared that Ricciardo's career at McLaren is already over.

These are strong statements from Jacques Villeneuve, who believes that Daniel Ricciardo’s time at McLaren is limited. Given the Australian’s recent results, it is possible that the Woking team may decide to part ways with their driver at the end of the season. Jacques Villeneuve mentions the “clauses in the contract” mentioned by Zak Brown, McLaren’s CEO. According to him, these clauses are simply a way to announce that a decision has been made and to put pressure on the driver, as well as to prepare the media.
Villeneuve continues by stating: “In essence, he is a very well-paid driver who costs his team a lot of money, doesn’t bring in any points, and lacks the necessary speed for the team to develop the car. He simply costs money. It would be cheaper to continue paying Ricciardo’s salary, let him sit on his couch at home, and put another driver in his seat. It’s a harsh reality, but that’s Formula 1.”
The 32-year-old driver has not reported being in serious talks with another team for 2023, and there are no rumors suggesting a transfer either. But he doesn’t let himself get down by all the comments about his season and himself: “My skin is tanned, beautiful, and very resilient. No one will be tougher on myself than me,” he added with a smile.
Daniel Ricciardo needs to bounce back after this start of the season, just like he did in his previous one. He has only scored 11 points in 7 races, his worst result since 2013. With the upcoming Grand Prix in Azerbaijan, the scene of his incredible triple overtake in 2017, he will hope with all his heart to find the solution to his lack of performance.
