The gap between the top teams and the midfield is “sad” for Gasly
Pierre Gasly regrets that the gap between the leading teams and the others has widened this season.

Pierre Gasly is having a difficult start to the season. With only six points after seven races, he is not repeating the standards he had set in the last two seasons. And unlike last year, Yuki Tsunoda is performing well, as the Japanese driver has five more points than the Frenchman.
A lack of points which is obviously explained in large part by the performance of the AT03, which seems less comfortable than its predecessors with the new 2022 regulations. Pierre Gasly believes that the gaps have widened this season between Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes, and the others. « I expected the midfield to get closer – which, I believe, happened. I think that if you look from the fourth force of the grid to probably the last, in fact, I think we all have come much closer together. »
« But the top three is a different world,” continues the native of Rouen. « Even last year, I was excited several times because I could qualify ahead of a Ferrari, sometimes Red Bull, sometimes Mercedes. I felt like those top three, they were faster, but they weren’t in a league so different as one could sometimes say. This year, there’s no way. »
Gasly hopes that this gap can be narrowed in the coming years, so that drivers truly play an important role in the rankings. There is clearly a big difference between the two. Only Bottas can occasionally challenge them. But they are alone, and we are literally fighting for seventh [place]. Which is a bit sad, because clearly the goal was to bring everything closer together. So I hope that we will find a solution for the coming years, because that is the goal and that is what we all demand as drivers. We want drivers to have a greater impact on the final result.
In 2021, Pierre Gasly had achieved a podium finish in Baku. This weekend, with such gaps between the cars, that objective seems completely unattainable, unless there are unforeseen events during the race that could really shake up the Grand Prix.
