A few days after a brilliant victory in Monaco, Sergio Pérez was confirmed at Red Bull until 2024. This extension also puts to rest Pierre Gasly’s hopes of returning to Red Bull, if there were any left. The Normandy native initially seems understanding about this choice. “It’s not like it’s a surprise because I’m someone who is very objective and based on what they want from a number two driver, Pérez ticks all the boxes,” he explains.

The impact that this has on my career and with the ambitions I have, it obviously affected it. I showed last year, when the car was competitive, what I was capable of in the middle of the pack. Not just last year, but also in 2020 and 2019. So that’s why I say I understand their position, but on the other hand, it doesn’t mean that I understand the fact that things should remain as they are. But it’s just about finding what’s best for everyone,” Gasly adds about Sergio Pérez’s reappointment to the main team.

At AlphaTauri (formerly Toro Rosso) since mid-2019 and its demotion from the Red Bull team after a very difficult start to the season, Pierre Gasly, at 26 years old, now wants his career to take another turn. Personally, of course, I have ambitions and my ambitions are not limited to fighting for the top ten. That’s not why I work every day. I want more than that, I want to fight at the front.

For that, it seems almost imperative to leave AlphaTauri. Gasly indicates that he will consider all the options that will be presented to him. Beyond 2023, I consider all the options because I have nothing beyond that. These are things we have to discuss with Helmut. Obviously, they want to keep me in the program, but we have to see how to make it work. These are just normal conversations that are ongoing.

These options could be McLaren in case of Daniel Ricciardo’s departure or Aston Martin if Sebastian Vettel chose not to continue in F1. When asked if he would be interested in a move like Alex Albon’s, who reached an agreement to go to Williams while remaining a Red Bull driver, here is the response from the Rouen native: « For now, I would say yes. I don’t want to elaborate because I don’t want to make headlines about what’s happening. »

Pierre Gasly therefore appears definitively resigned to returning to Red Bull. The Frenchman will be attentive to any opportunity that presents itself if he wants a change of scenery and to leave the Faenza team.
