Leclerc would have won in Baku according to Ferrari’s simulations
Ferrari conducted simulations in Baku that indicate Charles Leclerc would have comfortably won if it wasn't for his retirement due to an engine issue. More regrets for the Scuderia.

It’s another potential victory that slipped away for Ferrari in Baku. The Scuderia lost both of its drivers, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, in just a few laps due to mechanical retirements. A zero score that is a big blow to the championship, as Ferrari is now 80 points behind Red Bull, and Leclerc is 34 points behind Verstappen.
The debacle in Baku is even more painful considering that Charles Leclerc would have comfortably won ahead of Max Verstappen, according to simulations conducted by Ferrari, had it not been for his retirement.
Red Bull tried to stay on the medium tire for as long as possible, but it quickly deteriorated significantly. Inaki Rueda, the strategist for the Scuderia, explains that even the performance of the Ferrari seemed better in the twisty part of the circuit.
Perez lost a lot of time by staying in front of Leclerc. Our simulations show that without this retirement – and if there hadn’t been another virtual safety car – Leclerc would have comfortably won the race against Verstappen. Ferrari must now not dwell on their failures and focus on the Canadian Grand Prix this Sunday to try to maintain hope of winning both championships.
