The rain is coming to Montreal

The first free practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix starts this Friday, but the Canadian weather may compromise both sessions of the day.

The teams were aware upon arriving in Montreal. The weather forecast for Friday and Saturday is expected to be extremely unpredictable. Some images are already circulating on the teams’ social media, showing that the pit lane is not really accessible.

This brings to mind the events of the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix, where the “race” was greatly disrupted by rain to the point that it only took place on two laps, or even this year’s Monaco Grand Prix, which almost suffered the same fate. No need to panic for now, it’s only the Friday sessions that are threatened, as the rain is not expected to continue as heavily until tomorrow and Sunday.

It has already happened in the past that sessions have been canceled due to weather conditions, like in 2019 in Japan, where the entire Saturday was canceled (FP3+Qualifying), or in 2020 with the free practice 3 session of the Austrian Grand Prix.

With the first session scheduled for 8 PM tonight, the conditions will have time to change. For now, the practice sessions are still going ahead, but we will have to wait later in the day for more information regarding a possible cancellation of the first and/or second free practice sessions.

As a reminder, the canceled practice sessions will not be rescheduled later on. The FIA will give its verdict a few minutes before the official cancellation of the session. If the weather does not improve today or tomorrow, and the qualifying session is canceled on Saturday, it will take place normally on Sunday morning, where the conditions are expected to be more suitable for driving.
