Carlos Sainz was leading the Canadian Grand Prix ahead of Max Verstappen with over 8 seconds of a lead, but a relatively late safety car forced Sainz to enter the pits to put on fresh tires, handing the lead of the race to Verstappen.

Despite the difference in tire grip, the Spaniard was unable to find a way past the Red Bull driver and will have to settle for a frustrating second place. However, Carlos Sainz had time to reflect during the safety car period.

He questions the choice of hard tires over soft tires: « the safety car stayed on track longer than expected. When the race resumed, there were only 16 laps left instead of 20, which was the right number of laps to possibly try the soft tires and attempt to overtake Max during the warm-up of his hard tires at the restart ».

« Afterwards, it’s easy to say. At the time, with about twenty laps remaining, the hard tires were the best to reach the finish, knowing that they would be fresher than Max’s. It’s a shame. »

Sainz will have tried everything for 15 laps to overtake Max Verstappen but without success, he finishes the race in a frustrating second place.
