During the Azerbaijan Grand Prix a week ago, McLaren stood out with a double entry into the points. Daniel Ricciardo finished 8th, just ahead of his teammate Lando Norris in 9th position.

This weekend in Montreal, the exact opposite happened. Both cars from the Woking team finished the race outside the points, with Ricciardo in 11th and Norris in 15th. Eliminated in Q2 on Saturday, the young British driver was unable to make a comeback and even lost a position compared to his starting position.

After the race, Lando Norris stated that his MCL36 simply lacked performance and top speed this weekend. The car is not good enough. Sometimes it’s good. I was a bit more optimistic after Friday’s practice sessions and we could have done better today. But when I was stuck behind the Williams, they are so fast, surely the fastest on the straight and we are surely the slowest on those straights, so it’s literally impossible to overtake and we couldn’t do anything about it.

We owe them apologies.

While he saw the checkered flag without scoring points for the second time this season (excluding his retirement in Miami), Lando Norris is pushing his team to continue the hard work to improve this MCL36.

We have to continue working very hard and keep trying many different things. Maybe sometimes things are really good. But it’s never an incredible pace. We are lucky sometimes. Days like today, when it’s simpler and you don’t have luck on your side, it shows where we really are.

Andreas Seidl, team principal, also publicly apologized to his drivers. We did not give Lando or Daniel the package they deserve today, so we owe them an apology. We must also use this as an opportunity to learn and come back stronger in two weeks for our home race at Silverstone.

Tough but fair, Lando Norris acknowledges that McLaren still has a lot of progress to make, even though the situation is not as disastrous as it was in Bahrain.
