Hungarian Grand Prix – Free Practice 2: Leclerc ahead of Norris and Sainz!

The weather conditions are identical to those of FP1. 33° in the air and 47° on the track. So it is hot but the conditions will be cooler tomorrow during the qualifying session with expected thunderstorms.

The rear wing of the Aston Martin has not returned to its usual design. Vettel and Stroll, who tested a new aerodynamic element in FP1 contrary to the regulations, continue to test it in FP2.

After barely 5 minutes of testing, Leclerc has already improved his time and goes below one minute and nineteen seconds. In the FP1, only 2 drivers had achieved it: Sainz and Verstappen.

Mick Schumacher is the first to scare himself at turn 6, a right-left corner. He loses the rear but manages to countersteer and takes advantage to execute a superb drift. Albon, after 20 minutes in the session, also made a mistake. He loses the rear at turn 1, locking the rear tires.

This weekend in Hungary, the limits of the track are the white lines. If all four wheels go outside, the lap time is canceled. Several drivers, including Sainz and Gasly, have been caught in the game. Both of them had their lap times canceled.

The McLarens are in great shape this Friday. Norris, one of the first ones to put on soft tires, even managed to set the fastest time at the midway point in 1:18.662. Leclerc will take this fastest time, with the same soft tires, a few minutes later for a two-tenths improvement in 1:18.445.

Wheel lock-ups are still common in FP2. This proves that the settings are not yet optimized.

The second part of the session was mainly dedicated to tire tests on longer relays. Therefore, the lap times were not improved after the first 35 minutes.

Charles Leclerc therefore sets the fastest time, improving the best time from Free Practice 1 by 4 tenths of a second. Norris is second with the McLaren, only 2 tenths behind. Sainz is P3 ahead of Verstappen and Ricciardo. The top 5 are within 5 tenths of each other. Alonso is ahead of Vettel, Russell, and Perez in only the 9th position. Bottas enters the top 10 while Hamilton is 11th.

The improvements made by Magnussen on the Haas don’t seem to really bear fruit. His teammate Mick Schumacher is right behind him in 17th position, with only a tenth of a second behind.
