Aston Martin on break: trailing behind

Aston Martin is having a catastrophic start to the season in terms of points, with a total of only 20 small units. Will they manage to turn the situation around and gather more points during the rest of the season?

Aston Martin has had a very poor start to the season. With only 20 points, they are currently in 9th place among the constructors. Quite a disappointing ranking for a team that could be competing for a higher position. They are quite far behind the 5th and 6th places and will do everything they can to try and snatch 7th place.

The best race

It is during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix that Aston Martin achieved its best performance in terms of points collected. With the 8 points brought by Sebastian Vettel with his 6th place, the team was able to have a good race. The retirement of Stroll during this Grand Prix is the downside and the team could have scored more points.

But it was during the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix that the drivers achieved their best ranking at the same time. With an 8th place for Vettel and a 10th place for Stroll, the team was able to earn 5 points. A good result considering the starting positions of both drivers. The German started from 13th position and the Canadian from 15th.

The worst race

The Australian Grand Prix was perilous for the team. With a 12th place finish for Stroll and a retirement for Vettel, Aston Martin ended up with no points. The German driver had a spin that forced him to retire on his return to competition. Both drivers also started from very far back on the grid. Stroll started from 19th position and Vettel from 17th. It was a forgettable weekend for Aston Martin.

A progression?

There is a clear progression of the team throughout the races. While they hadn’t scored any points in the first 3 races, the team managed to score points in more and more Grand Prix. With only two Grand Prix without points between the first ones scored and the last race in Hungary, Aston Martin is starting to become consistent. This consistency will need to be confirmed in the upcoming Grand Prix.

Reliability compared to the rest of the field

With 3 retirements during this first part of the season, we can say that Aston Martin cars are reliable enough to avoid retirements. However, the drivers’ results show that the cars lack power to try and secure more points against their competitors. Results to be followed for the rest of the season.

Pilot Duel

It is Sebastian Vettel who scores the most points. By scoring 16 out of the team’s 20 points, the four-time world champion is a major asset for point collection. After missing the first two races due to Covid and retiring in the third one, the driver managed to finish in the top 10 on 5 occasions in the last 10 races. A 50% percentage that allowed him to earn points for both his personal ranking and his team.

His best race was undoubtedly in Azerbaijan, where he brought back 8 points with a great 6th place. With his earned points, he is currently 14th in the standings.

Lance Stroll is having a lot of difficulty in this half-season. He has only managed to score 4 measly points out of the 13 races contested. Every time, he finished in 10th place and only scored points on 4 occasions. These results are not very conclusive so far.

Stroll’s 4 points place him in 18th position. A ranking below what we can expect from him. Vettel is therefore easily ahead of Stroll. He is better in all areas and manages to bring in some valuable points for Aston Martin.
