Vettel’s future will not be in Formula E
Sebastian Vettel will not join the Formula E ranks next season. The current Aston Martin driver is not interested in the electric single-seater championship.
Despite being a staunch advocate for the environment, Sebastian Vettel does not see Formula E as a step forward for motorsport in the fight against climate change. Without mincing words, the four-time world champion did not hesitate to voice his thoughts on this discipline, which was born in 2014.
“I really don’t like Formula E at all and I think it’s not the future. I don’t want to be a mascot and I don’t want to associate my image with something that doesn’t convince me,” said the former Red Bull driver. “I don’t see the purpose behind this category. The technology developed has nothing to do with the technology that a regular car could use. It’s not good for the environment if the batteries are charged with fossil fuels instead of renewable energy.”
Formula E champion during the 2016-2017 season and former F1 driver, Lucas Di Grassi criticized his former colleague’s comments on Twitter: “If Vettel doesn’t want to come to Formula E, it’s his choice. Although it is the second most lucrative single-seater series, it’s still far from the top salaries in F1,” the Brazilian driver began.
The former Virgin Racing driver took the opportunity to defend the discipline he has been involved in since its inception: « Saying that technology is not relevant to the future of the automobile, either he has no idea what he is talking about, or he is deliberately trying to mislead the general public. »
Not stopping there, Di Grassi didn’t hold back in attacking Vettel on his commitment to ecology: « All the things he does, collecting garbage, using his bike,… it’s just greenwashing, it’s not what he truly believes. Whether he likes the series or not, he should support it.”
If he were to change his mind, Vettel now knows that he wouldn’t be welcomed with joy by all Formula E drivers!
