Nyck de Vries impresses in his F1 debut
Nyck de Vries arrived as a conqueror for his first Formula 1 qualifying session, making it into Q2 with Williams and placing eighth on the starting grid after several penalties were applied.

Nicholas Latifi definitely has a lot to worry about regarding his future in Formula 1 next season. His main concern is named Nyck de Vries, who is Toto Wolff’s protege and was the Formula E champion just last year with Mercedes.
Called in at the last minute to replace the injured Alex Albon at Williams, the young Dutchman surprised the paddock in his first qualifying session in the premier category. He managed to make it to Q2, where he secured the thirteenth position, three places ahead of his Canadian teammate. This afternoon, Nyck de Vries will start from eighth position, in the Grand Prix d’Italie qualifying session: Pole position and fastest time for Leclerc.
“> Taking advantage of the penalties imposed on many drivers. Latifi, on the other hand, will start from the tenth position.”
Frustration on the last lap
« First of all, I would like to express how sorry I am for Alex, and I hope he recovers quickly. It was a great opportunity for me, even though it’s challenging to make the jump to a Formula 1 car like this one. Overall, I am satisfied with how everything went. It’s good to start in the top 10, said Nyck de Vries to journalists after the qualifying session, without excessive enthusiasm.
It’s because the Dutch driver believes that he could have done better, when he lost control of the Williams on his last lap, locking the rear wheels in the second sector.
I think there was more potential in the car. I locked up the rear in my last lap, but I consider it a positive qualifying session for me. With the penalties, it’s good news to start several positions higher. We have a lot of work to do, but it was a good response to the last-minute call, concluded the Formula E champion, referring to his last-minute replacement.
Will Nyck de Vries be able to continue his momentum by grabbing places this afternoon? Caution is advised, as ahead of him stand two hungry world champions named Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen…
