The Malaysian Grand Prix will not be back anytime soon

Several Grand Prix races have been stopped or will not be renewed. The French Grand Prix is the latest to suffer from this and will not return in 2023, unless other promoters withdraw. Another Grand Prix that had been previously abandoned was the Malaysian Grand Prix.

In 2017, the Malaysian Grand Prix hosted the Formula 1 championship for the last time. Present in the calendar since 1999, the country could no longer host the event due to a lack of means – the costs of participating in the championship becoming increasingly high.

The question of the return of this Grand Prix of the championship has been raised, but the circuit director has responded negatively to the country’s participation in the upcoming championships.

At this stage, the answer is no, not at the moment.

Malaysia has been going through a major economic crisis for several years, and it is quite difficult for the country to predict events of this nature.

Even though the Grand Prix was a major tourist activity and brought in a lot of revenue for the country, the balance between the cost of the event and the generated income was negative.

The cost to host a Grand Prix is also becoming increasingly high, and historic races like the ones in Monaco and Belgium are frequently at risk of being eliminated from the calendar.

For the Malaysian Grand Prix, the director of the Sepang circuit has not closed the door to a return of Formula 1 to his land. However, he is waiting to see his country recover financially in order to have a chance of hosting a Grand Prix again.

(Maybe) in the next two/three years, when the country’s economy will be stabilized.
