Alexander Rossi spoke out after Colton Herta was rejected for a seat in a Formula 1 car next year. The driver was rumored to be joining AlphaTauri as a replacement for Pierre Gasly, who is heading to Alpine.

The IndyCar driver must have a Super Licence to be able to drive in F1, but he does not have the required number of points to be eligible, with 32 points received out of the 40 needed.

Alexander Rossi does not question the functionality of the Super License that prevents drivers from buying their place in F1. On the contrary, he finds it fair, but considers it unfortunate to prevent certain talented individuals who do not have the necessary points from participating in the F1 championship.

The basic principle was to prevent people from buying their place in F1 and allow talent to be the deciding factor. That’s great.

« We all agree that Colton has the talent and abilities to be in F1. It is also very good and he should have this opportunity if it is offered to him. Period. Motorsport remains the most important high-level discipline in the world where money can prevail over talent.

The former American Formula 1 driver would like to see the Super Licence rule reconsidered for cases like that of Colton Herta, his compatriot.

He criticizes in the same way the various decisions made in the past by the authorities of motor racing. According to him, it is these decisions that have cost Herta’s seat at AlphaTauri.

« What is disappointing and, in my opinion, the fundamental problem, is that the sporting aspect has so often been sidelined compared to the commercial aspect that a method had to be implemented for certain teams to stop hiring drivers based solely on their financial support. »

In the end, these past decisions, whether driven by greed or necessity, are what cost Colton the opportunity to make the decision for himself if he wanted to change careers and race in F1. Not points on a license.

Regardless, Colton Herta will not be racing in Formula 1 next year, and Nyck de Vries is rumored to be Gasly’s replacement at AlphaTauri if the latter were to move to Alpine.
