George Russell receives a 5-second penalty for putting Sainz off-track
Carlos Sainz had to retire on the first lap of the United States Grand Prix after being involved in a collision with George Russell.
The Grand Prix races follow each other and look alike for Carlos Sainz. After his abandonment at Suzuka following his mistake on a wet track that led him into the wall, the Spaniard was this time a victim of a collision with George Russell shortly after the start of the United States Grand Prix. It is even more unfortunate for the Ferrari driver as he started in pole position. However, he had a bad start, while a very strong Max Verstappen passed him as soon as the lights went out.
While the two Mercedes were side by side in the first turn, George Russell was battling to gain an advantage over his teammate. The British driver went a bit too wide and made contact with Carlos Sainz, who spun out. As a result, Sainz dropped to the bottom of the standings and complained over the radio about a flat tire. He went through the pit lane hoping to continue the race, but he was forced to retire. This marks the 6th retirement for the Madrilene this season.
Following this accident, George Russell receives a 5-second penalty from the FIA. As of writing, the British driver is in eighth position.
