How many points has Fernando Alonso lost due to reliability this season?

Fernando Alonso missed another opportunity to score points when he was forced to retire due to a reliability problem. Having put in some remarkable performances throughout the year, the Spanish driver was forced to retire on numerous occasions, due to mechanical problems with his power unit. Currently behind his team-mate in the overall standings, he could be in a completely different position had his single-seater not failed him.

After a return to the discipline marked by impressive performances, including a podium finish during the 2021 season, Fernando Alonso is making the most of his race car this season and has produced some remarkable moments, such as his second place in qualifying at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Unfortunately, the engine block of his Alpine has let him down on numerous occasions when he was in a good position to score points. A significant loss that affects the double Spanish world champion and his team, who are fighting McLaren for 4th place in the World Constructors’ Championship.

Problems have accumulated throughout the season for Alonso, who had to retire 5 times. This represents a significant loss of points when considering the performance of the A522 and the talent of the Spanish driver. As he was affected four times by engine issues, forcing him to retire, he also fell victim to several race incidents that prevented him from scoring additional points.

An estimate gives a loss of around 40 points, which would propel Alonso to the same level as Lando Norris. He would also have a lead of nearly 30 points over his teammate Esteban Ocon. But where the impact of these “lost” points is most significant is in the world constructors’ championship because currently, Alpine only has a 7-point lead over McLaren, despite the fact that the French team has a more powerful car.

These 40 points would not allow Alpine to compete with Mercedes for 3rd place in the championship, but it would be a good lead over McLaren as it would not only increase the French team’s capital but also reduce the points gained by McLaren.

Here are the races where Fernando Alonso lost points that seemed to be destined for him:

Arabie Sahoudite

He gave up due to an engine failure while he was in 7th place (6 points).

Australie

The virtual safety car disadvantaged him and he suffered a hydraulic problem. He was in 6th position and finished 17th (with 8 points).

Imola

He is in 8th place and abandons following a crash with Mick Schumacher (4 points).

Espagne

He changes his engine and can’t do better than a 9th place despite an excellent pace. Ocon scores 4 more points by finishing in 7th place.

Canada

Qualified second, the Spanish champion holds a solid 5th position before experiencing engine issues. He defends his seventh place too strongly and incurs a penalty, causing him to drop to 9th place
(8 points).

Autriche

The Alpines have rhythm, Alonso is 8th in qualifying, but during the sprint race his car breaks down. He finishes 10th in the Grand Prix after making a remarkable comeback, while Ocon finishes in 5th place.

Italie
He is forced to retire due to engine problems while in 7th place.
(6 points).

Singapour
The same mechanical incident repeats itself, Alonso was in 6th position and retires.
(8 points)

Mexique

The Spanish double world champion qualifies seventh and holds that position in the race before having to withdraw in the final laps due to an engine problem (6 points).

Thus, if we take into account the mechanical incidents that have affected Alonso this season as well as his crash with Mick Schumacher, we note 46 lost points.

A substantial amount that would allow Alpine to have more than a 50-point lead over McLaren at this stage of the championship, almost guaranteeing a 4th place finish in the constructor’s championship.

Fernando Alonso would also be ahead of Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings and would have a 35-point lead over his teammate, Esteban Ocon.
