Red Bull praised by Pirelli for excellent tire use
Tire management is one of the most important elements in Formula 1. This year, new tires have made their appearance, and one team has managed to make the most of them: Red Bull. This excellent management has been congratulated by the manufacturer itself, in the person of Mario Isola, Pirelli's managing director.
Since the beginning of the 2022 season, following the regulation change, new 18-inch rims and new tires are equipped on the Formula 1 cars. The Mexican Grand Prix was a true show of strength for Red Bull. The Austrian team has been masterfully managing these tires since the start of the season and once again showed us that they know how to make the right choices without succumbing to the pressure from their opponents.
By opting for medium tires on both of these single-seaters, Red Bull took risks because it was not thought that this type of tire would allow them to finish the race with a decent pace. The adjustments made to the Red Bull throughout the season have minimized tire degradation and extended the stints compared to other teams.
Mario Isola, the general manager of Pirelli, is impressed by the performances displayed by Red Bull towards the end of the season: « In the last part of the season, we have seen Red Bull very effectively using the tires. »
The strategic choice made by Mercedes regarding the tires reinforces Mario Isola’s interest in offering different types of rubber.
This shows us once again how important it is to provide tires with different characteristics to challenge teams to use them in the best possible way.
The last two Grand Prix of the season will be interesting to follow regarding tire management. The Brazilian Grand Prix, which will take place next week, will be held in intense heat, and the Interlagos circuit also has very few straight lines to properly cool the tires. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which will conclude the season, will also put the tires to the test with a very twisty third sector.
