Mick Schumacher could become reserve driver for Mercedes
The son of the seven-time German world champion does not have a secure future in Formula 1 for the coming seasons. His contract with Haas expires at the end of this year, and the American team doesn't seem to want to keep him on its payroll. Toto Wolff spoke about the team's relationship with the young German driver, who could become a reserve driver for Mercedes next season.

The announcement of the second Haas driver for the 2023 season is eagerly awaited in the paddock as it is the last available seat in Formula 1 for next season. However, despite good results achieved this summer, Mick Schumacher does not seem to have convinced the American team to extend his contract. His lack of pace compared to his teammate and his numerous mistakes on the track tarnish his progress.
In this complicated context that does not offer any prospects for Mick Schumacher as a Formula 1 regular driver, the German driver could potentially head towards a position as a reserve driver in the pinnacle of motor racing. One of the teams that could welcome him is Mercedes. Toto Wolff primarily wishes for the Haas driver to secure a regular seat, but he does not completely rule out the possibility of him joining the German team.
(I) I don’t know what Mick’s status is at Haas. I think the most important thing for him is to secure a race seat.
« I don’t hide the fact that the Schumacher family is part of Mercedes and that we really appreciate Mick as both a personality and a race driver. That’s why we will definitely discuss this option if it arises. But the first priority should be to secure a regular seat, as that’s what he can do and deserves.

Mercedes is looking for a reserve driver for the next season. Indeed, the two current reserves of the team will join new teams next season. Nyck de Vries will make his debut as a regular driver at AlphaTauri, while Stoffel Vandoorne will become a test driver and reserve driver at Aston Martin. However, Mick Schumacher has a direct competitor for this reserve driver seat, as Daniel Ricciardo is also rumored to join the German team.
