Since its return to Formula 1 in 2021, Aston Martin has been using power units supplied by Mercedes. The reliability of the German engines is impressive, and they have also proven to be highly efficient. However, a 100% Aston Martin power unit was being studied before the confirmation of the new engine regulations, set to arrive in 2026.

A sixth constructor?

Aston Martin has been experiencing significant growth since its return to Formula 1, with the English team making considerable investments by recruiting renowned drivers, among other things. As a result, the Technical Director of the English team, Andrew Green, had mentioned the potential development of an Aston Martin engine for 2026. If this had materialized, Aston Martin would have become the 6th engine manufacturer in Formula 1, challenging Renault, Red Bull Powertrains, Ferrari, Mercedes, and Audi.

« For the future, considering our ambitions, we are clearly studying the possibility of producing our own power unit,” Green had declared earlier this year. “The year 2026 should see this new regulation come into effect and we would like to be involved,” stated Andy Green.

A sidelined track.

Following the announcement of the new regulation that will come into effect in 2026, Aston Martin has finally decided to retain the powertrains from their current partner that meet their requirements. There will be no continuation of the project to build a powertrain for the next regulation.

« Therefore, we have decided that we are very, very satisfied with our current offer regarding power units with our partner. Therefore, we will not pursue the idea of developing our own engine. » Declared Mike Krack, the boss of the British team.
