Bottas raises the bar after an encouraging first season with Alfa Romeo
Valterri Bottas has just completed his first season with Alfa Romeo. The Finnish driver performed well throughout the season and established himself as one of the benchmarks in the middle of the pack. He has set himself a more ambitious goal for 2023.
Alfa Romeo underwent a significant restructuring in 2022 with the arrival of two new drivers, rookie Guanyu Zhou and experienced Valterri Bottas. The latter did not disappoint his new team, consistently fighting at the front of the field at the beginning of the season.
Fighting regularly for points.
Alfa Romeo had an excellent start to the 2022 season. The Italian-Swiss team emerged as one of the major forces in the midfield during the first few Grand Prix races. Valterri Bottas, on the other hand, achieved the team’s best result at Imola by finishing in 5th place. Unfortunately, this positive momentum quickly faded. The team was unable to bring many improvements to the car and will not be able to consistently fight for points during the second half of the championship.
The objective that Valterri Bottas sets for himself for the 2023 season is to be able to finish in the points in every race and potentially contend for a podium in the event of a turnaround.
We want to take a big step, which is difficult but not impossible. For 2023, I think it is realistic to consistently finish in the points in each race and sometimes have a chance to fight for a podium with a bit of luck, says the Finnish driver in an interview with Formulapassion.it.
It’s a daring bet but not impossible when considering Sauber’s expertise and the modern facilities that the team has to design a high-performance car.
