AlphaTauri has the potential to come back in the pack
Pierre Gasly will enter another dimension in 2023 as he will be driving for a manufacturer for the first time in his career. After 6 seasons with Red Bull, the French driver will discover the Alpine team. However, despite a disappointing 2022 season with AlphaTauri, he believes that the Faenza team could be in contention in the upper midfield in 2023.

AlphaTauri experienced a real disappointment in 2022. The team had come off two promising seasons, highlighted by a victory and a sixth place in the constructors’ championship, but was unable to compete with the midfield teams throughout the season.
From the first Grand Prix of the 2022 season, the AT03 seemed to be lagging behind and performing poorly. This phenomenon intensified throughout the season with difficult qualifications and few on-track battles. Pierre Gasly is frustrated that he couldn’t fully exploit the potential of his car. This is mainly due to excessive weight which has compromised the performance of the AlphaTauri according to the French driver.
I think the car had potential. But what also weakened us was the fact that we were well above the minimum weight throughout the season. We’re talking about a few tenths of a second per lap. We couldn’t get rid of this excess weight. » said the Norman to Auto Motor und Sport.
The Norman driver sees potential in his former team and believes that they could compete in the upper midfield for 2023. According to him, the team from Faenza has all the necessary resources to catch up with the leading group in the midfield. The introduction of the budget cap and the allocation of wind tunnel time based on the team’s position in the constructor’s championship will facilitate the development of AlphaTauri during the 2023 season.
The team has what it takes to perform in the upper middle part of the standings. Just like it was the case in 2021. Back then, we had the car to finish fifth in the World Championship. It was Yuki Tsunoda’s first season in Formula 1. If it had been his second season and he had achieved the same performance as in 2022, we would certainly have finished fifth. That’s why I see the potential. The people are here, the structures are in place.
