Silverstone would like a Grand Prix spread over 4 days
Formula 1 continues to attract new fans, and the Silverstone circuit wants to harness this interest in the premier motorsport discipline by organizing a 4-day British Grand Prix. The aim of this operation is to provide spectators with more on-track action and entertainment.
The British Grand Prix is one of the must-see events of the Formula 1 World Championship, attracting enormous crowds to a track that has become legendary. During the 2022 edition of the Grand Prix, a new attendance record was set with 400,000 people over the course of the weekend and over 100,000 spectators per day of competition. While a Formula 1 weekend currently takes place over three days, it would however be possible to include races from support categories, for example, for this 4-day weekend.
“We are looking to extend the weekend,” said the English circuit’s general manager, Stuart Pringle, to Autosport.
I’m working hard on Formula 1. I think they need to change the format of the weekend… Let’s do something for Thursday. There are a lot of people who want to come and see things, and three days are not really enough,” assures Pringle.
This additional testing day could allow the junior categories (Formula 2, Formula 3, Porsche Supercup) to benefit from more track time and preparation during a race weekend. This initiative was already implemented earlier this year with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, where the extra day allowed the inclusion of junior categories such as V8 Supercars and S5000 on Thursday.
