Hamilton and Mercedes have begun discussions about post-2023
In addition to the launch of the W14, the boss of the Mercedes team, Toto Wolff, mentioned the extension of the contract with the seven-time world champion.

At 38 years old, Lewis Hamilton is about to start his 17th season in Formula One and his 11th with Mercedes. At the end of the 2023 season, he will reach the end of his contract.
And, while the seven-time world champion expressed his desire to continue driving with Mercedes, discussions between the two parties for a new contract extension began several months ago, even before the start of the season.
During the unveiling of the W14, Toto Wolff stated that the age of the driver is not a determining factor in negotiations which will take their time.
First discussions
“We had an initial discussion, but I don’t want to commit to a timeline because it’s not important, neither for him nor for us. It could last a whole year, and we’ll find the right moment,” says Toto Wolff.
« I think that his 38 years old do not play a role for his next contract. If we look at some top athletes, they have successfully pushed the limits worldwide… I think of Tom Brady, who is 45 years old: he is on the field, throwing the ball and getting tackled. Age therefore does not play a role. »
In terms of contractual situation, we have always found good solutions that reflect his value for the team and for the sport, and on the other hand, I believe Mercedes is the place where he wants to be. These things have never been a source of dispute.
“We won eight consecutive constructor titles and had a setback last season,” the leader recalled. “The resources and capabilities are there, and we just need to keep progressing as we did last year. The team can perform, and I don’t think there is any doubt in Lewis’ mind about that.”
