Charles Leclerc could face a ten-place penalty on the next starting grid in Saudi Arabia for losing one of his batteries in Bahrain. Since he failed to score any points last Sunday due to his retirement, such a scenario could seriously tarnish his start to the 2023 season.

Indeed, Ferrari had replaced the energy accumulator and the electronic engine control system of the Monégasque’s car before the race, as a precaution. It was this new energy tank that broke down in the 41st lap of the Grand Prix.

Ferrari conducts an in-depth investigation

However, the Scuderia seems to be able to get out of this situation. After an internal investigation, Frédéric Vasseur’s team has reportedly found the cause of the breakdown. The electrical harness malfunctioned because the casing was improperly secured, meaning it did not withstand the numerous bumps on the Sakhir circuit. Therefore, there was no human error in replacing the power unit before the race.

This detection is good news for Ferrari and could help them avoid the penalty.
