Eliminated in the first part of the qualifying session, Pierre Gasly’s replacement, Nyck de Vries, took advantage of the different retirements and a clean race the following day in the Grand Prix to position himself just outside the points.

However, his team made the mistake of not bringing in their driver to fit him with the soft tires during the virtual safety car – caused by Charles Leclerc’s pit stop on the track – unlike his rivals, which prevented him from defending his position, and ultimately finishing in 14th place.

I am quite satisfied with our race. Naturally, we can always do better, but after the first two days of the weekend, it was a good comeback, indicated the former reserve driver of Mercedes.

Not only in terms of positions, because there have been a few dropouts, but also in terms of performances.

« I had the impression that our pace was good, we just missed the last pit stop, which left me on the track for many laps, but you have to play your cards and in the end, I think it was a decent race for us. »

Always learning

He also stated that this first race allowed him to better understand his bike. It was important to gain experience: I rode with the hard tire for the rest of the race, but ultimately, mileage and experience will help us for the season.

The points were not possible today, so we will turn to Saudi Arabia, which is a bit faster, meaning that the midfield will be different again.

The Dutchman will then try to score points for the second time, after opening his account with Williams at Monza in 2022.
