Another twist: Alonso regains third place

It was thought that the decision was final, but no: Fernando Alonso, initially demoted to 4th place behind George Russell, ultimately regained his 100th podium, according to an FIA document.

After examining new evidence from Aston Martin, we have considered that the decision made must be revised. Such are the words of the FIA statement, published late on Sunday evening.

Initially, Fernando Alonso was given a five-second penalty for being out of position on the grid. The Safety Car period allowed him to serve this penalty without consequences… However, the stewards believed that it had not been carried out properly.

So, ten seconds were added to the Spaniard’s time in the standings, even though he celebrated his podium completely normally. The decision came late, too late even.

Aston Martin has thus supported its claims: during similar pit stops, as part of a penalty, they have never been penalized, knowing that the jack was always in contact with the car. It is with the support of this evidence that the FIA and sports commissioners have chosen to award Fernando Alonso his 100th podium. Certainly at the cost of his reputation.
