Alpine believes that the issue of grid penalty should be studied

After the chaos of last weekend regarding Fernando Alonso's penalty, Alpine believes that the rule for grid placement needs to be revisited.

The directors of the ten teams and the members of the FIA must meet this Thursday to discuss the ambiguities surrounding Fernando Alonso’s penalty during the last Grand Prix.

It is already the second time this season that a car receives a penalty for not respecting the position on the grid, as Esteban Ocon had experienced during the opening race in Bahrain. He had then received a second penalty for not correctly serving the first one.

This Sunday, Aston Martin narrowly escaped the same penalty as it was found to have not properly served its penalty. The rear jack was deemed to have made contact with Alonso’s car before the five-second mark. However, the FIA ultimately decided that this situation was not considered “working on the car”.

Alan Permane, sporting director of Alpine, believes that this rule needs to be revised.

« Ours was fair. We were four tenths too fast (working on the car), so we have no complaints about that. » he declared to Speedcafe.

What seems a bit draconian, if I may say so, is this new regulation concerning where the car must stop on the starting grid. No one is advantaged by having 10 centimeters more on one side or the other.

A variable geometry?

He also emphasized that the drivers are unable to see how their car is positioned in relation to the lines.

In a car, the drivers cannot see these lines. They can see them when they arrive, but when they approach them, they disappear. That’s why I find it a bit difficult and pointless.

Esteban said that he had been focused all week [after what happened in Bahrain], but he said that he arrived at the grid and had no idea where he was.

Regarding the fact that Alonso’s second penalty was announced after the race was finished, Permane believes that there should be a rule stating that penalties must be declared within a certain number of laps or something like that.

The meeting tomorrow will provide some clarifications.
