After a failed qualification due to brake issues on his Red Bull, Sergio Pérez was forced to start from the back of the grid. Eventually launched from the pit lane along with Valtteri Bottas, his team took this opportunity to install a new battery and a new electronic control unit for him.

Sentenced to make a crazy comeback to the front of the pack, Pérez delighted the Australian crowd with several daring overtakes on his opponents. In the heart of the pack, the Red Bull driver, number 11, repeatedly chose turn 9 to get past the cars in front of him. Whether it was Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri, Kevin Magnussen’s Haas, or Esteban Ocon’s Alpine, they all fell victim to the native of Guadalajara at that spot.

Assisted by the four DRS zones proposed by the track outlined in Albert Park, Pérez found himself in 6th position at the time of the second race interruption following Magnussen’s accident. Following the penalty awarded to Carlos Sainz for colliding with Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin, Pérez ultimately finished 5th in this race, gaining a total of 14 places.

With 21% of the votes, the Mexican was thus elected Driver of the Day of this Australian Grand Prix thanks to this high-level performance.
