Audi would prioritize a good Formula 1 driver over a German driver

While the brand with the rings continues to establish its presence in the premier category by 2026, the CEO of Audi Formula Racing GmbH has indicated that the recruitment of drivers will be focused on abilities rather than the nationality of the driver.

Before seeing Audi in Formula 1, we will still have to wait for three seasons. However, speculations are already rampant regarding the duo of drivers who will be selected.

The Schumacher Rumor

The most persistent rumor revolves around former Haas driver Mick Schumacher, who is rumored to be replaced by his compatriot Nico Hülkenberg by the end of 2022 before finding refuge at Mercedes in a reserve role.

Generally, when a new team joins the premier category, it is quite common to see a driver sharing the same nationality being favored. Let’s recall that Mercedes’ return in 2021 saw the German manufacturer field two German drivers, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher. This explains why the 24-year-old son of the seven-time world champion keeps coming up so frequently.

However, Markus Duesmann, CEO of Audi AG, recently emphasized that no “concrete discussion” had taken place with the 24-year-old driver.

We are currently discussing with numerous decision-makers, pilots, and team directors, highlighted Duesmann.

There have been no concrete discussions with Mick Schumacher regarding an engagement.

Of course, German drivers interest us as much as they interest the parent company’s executives, but it is not an obligation for us.

Performance over nationality

These remarks were supported by Adam Baker, CEO of Audi Formula Racing GmbH, who expressed that, in his opinion, it is more important to have a highly skilled driver rather than giving priority to a person’s place of origin.

“With the first race in three years, it is too early to seriously discuss the drivers,” comments Baker. “Even though the interest in this subject is evident.”

« But any decision regarding the race drivers will be taken based on their performances. It is the top priority. »

“We cannot obviously exclude the possibility of providing a customer team, as we are obligated to do so by regulation »,” stated Baker.

But with six registered constructors for 2026, the chances are low. We are not actively seeking a client at the moment. We are focusing on the partnership with Sauber.
