Horner comments on Verstappen’s possible retirement
The Red Bull driver hinted that he could leave Formula 1 after the expiration of his contract in 2028.

Christian Horner has mentioned the possibility of Max Verstappen leaving Formula 1, stating that it is not an imminent risk. Indeed, the world champion has felt frustrated with the reshuffling of Grand Prix weekends due to the introduction of sprint races and the expansion of the calendar.
The Dutch driver hinted that he could leave when his contract with Red Bull expires at the end of the 2028 season. Horner stated that it was important for the drivers to be able to express their opinion on the direction being taken by F1.
Horner responds to Verstappen’s statements
« Well, fortunately, his contract still has many years to run, so we don’t see it as an immediate risk,” said Horner, in response to Verstappen’s threats to leave the team. « But, you know, of course, he has an opinion on it and he will always speak openly about it and express his opinion.
For the boss of Red Bull, it is difficult to look too far back. Did Fernando Alonso think he would still be racing at 42 years old? Probably not. I mean, Lewis Hamilton is also in his thirties.
« It is therefore difficult to predict the future. But I think it’s a good thing that drivers have opinions and don’t just become stereotypes. »
Verstappen in search of a third title
Verstappen, the reigning double world champion, should only be denied a third consecutive title by Sergio Pérez, in the other Red Bull. The Mexican is having the best start to his Formula 1 career with two wins, two seconds, and a fifth place in the first five races, plus a victory in the Azerbaijan sprint race.
Horner, who spoke before Verstappen’s third victory of the season in Miami, believes that the championship race will be a “marathon,” but warns that Mercedes and Ferrari can close the gap.
“Checo has had a fantastic start to the season, so he has begun the season stronger than he ever has,” praised Horner. “And I think, as we all know, confidence is an important thing in any sport, and Checo’s confidence is at its highest, and this championship will be a marathon where there will be ups and downs along the way.”
« His challenge, and the challenge for both drivers, is to maintain consistency, and it is certain that we will see Mercedes and Ferrari step up at some point, so it won’t just be our drivers’ job. »
