Wolff asserts that the improvements made will not be a “miracle solution”

Toto Wolff tempered expectations of a quick improvement in Mercedes’ performance by suggesting that there is “no miracle solution” to unlock half a second of performance. Mercedes will introduce improvements at Imola, which Wolff previously described as a “major surgery” aimed at dissecting the inconsistent performance of the W14.

But the team boss was quick to downplay expectations that Mercedes would suddenly unlock tenths per lap with the upgrades, as it will require a lot of correlation work with their simulations.

“We have to manage our own expectations because we are bringing a set of updates that will consist of new suspension and bodywork parts,” Wolff said. “But in my 15 years of F1 career, I have never seen a miracle solution that suddenly unlocks half a second of performance. So, I highly doubt that will happen here.”

Eliminate some variables not understood

Wolff explains that Mercedes has tested extreme variations of settings between Lewis Hamilton and George Russell to find the source of their problems, with the aim of eliminating certain variables. The Austrian added, “What I’m looking forward to is for us to eliminate certain variables where we think we’ve introduced something that we don’t understand in the car, and move towards a more stable platform. Then, we should see where the foundation is and what we can do from there.”

Wolff is optimistic about Mercedes’ ability to make the most out of the upcoming three Grand Prix, which includes the Monaco Grand Prix. « It’s good to have three consecutive races to really understand what’s going on, and it may give us some time later to sift through it all and make the resulting decisions in terms of evolution. »
