Fernando Alonso: “We had to be very careful in certain corners”
He had been asserting it for several days, Monaco would be his weekend and that turned out to be the case. Second at the finish line, he continues to rack up podium finishes and solidifies his third place in the World Championship.
The 2023 season is marked by consistency for Fernando Alonso. Today, he secures his fifth podium in six races. Despite this impressive second place, the Spanish driver acknowledged a challenging race in which he could do nothing to worry Max Verstappen.
It was difficult because when we started, we lost the opportunities to give ourselves a chance at the first turn. Then we had to play with the strategy, but Max drove really well on the medium tires, so it offered us no chance. Then the rain came, and it wasn’t easy to drive in those conditions.
Indeed, as expected, the rain arrived during the race, forcing the drivers to be extra vigilant in the narrow streets of the principality. We couldn’t go full throttle. We had to be very cautious in certain turns. It wasn’t easy, I was even surprised that there wasn’t a Safety Car or any other incident.
With this new podium, Alonso strengthens his position in third place in the championship and now has a 27-point lead over Lewis Hamilton. Victory has never been closer.
