Pérez does not plan to back down in the face of Max Verstappen

The Mexican believes that he can use his early season form as a springboard to defeat Max Verstappen. His greater understanding of the RB19 can also be an additional asset.

Sergio Pérez remains determined regarding his championship aspirations in Formula 1, believing that his early season form is returning and can be an advantage against Max Verstappen. After four races, the two teammates each had two victories, with the reigning champion only holding a six-point lead in the standings.

However, three races later, Verstappen has distanced himself from his garage neighbor and now enjoys a 53-point advantage in the standings, following a dip in form from Pérez, who notably failed to score any points in Monaco and only managed 12 in Spain, while Verstappen gathered 51 points out of a possible 52.

Despite the point gap and Max Verstappen’s form, which seems to allow him to secure a third consecutive world title, Sergio Pérez still believes in his chances of beating the Dutchman.

“I have been on par with Max since the beginning of the season,” Perez stated before the Spanish Grand Prix. “Being a teammate with Max is probably the most difficult thing one can have, because he is a driver who [doesn’t have many flaws], but I believe it is possible to beat him.”

A better adaptation to the car

Since last season, the new regulations have come into effect to allow the single-seaters to follow each other more easily in races and thus mitigate the phenomenon of “dirty air”, which quickly degraded the tires when a driver was in close proximity to their direct opponent. This new F1 design has been challenging to master for some drivers, like Sergio Pérez.

This season, the driver acknowledges having adapted much better to the new car than last year. The speed is there. If the accident [during the Monaco qualifications] had not occurred and I was half a second off the pace, I would be more worried, he added. But the positive point is that we managed to shake things up and I want to start winning.

I understand the weaknesses we had last year, so we approach race week with more serenity, and then the race is already at a much higher level in terms of preparation and understanding.
