The floor of Red Bull will not be copied
In Monaco, the floor of the Red Bull, the dominant car on the grid, was seen after Sergio Perez's crash. Some thought it would be copied. However, some teams will not adopt it.

The edition of the Monaco Grand Prix was marked by a few accidents. The streets of the principality, as usual, were the scene of incidents. But another problem has been added to these accidents.
To tow the damaged cars, the single-seaters were lifted by a crane. The images were also broadcasted on television, revealing certain parts and components, normally invisible, to the general public.
Revealing Images
Some teams were able to catch a glimpse of and take inspiration from certain floors revealed during the accidents of certain drivers. Sergio Perez’s Red Bull fell victim to this. After his crash, the images showing the car being moved were broadcasted on TV, allowing other teams to take inspiration from the most high-performing car’s floor.
However, Toto Wolff, team principal of Mercedes, is not convinced by this copying from other teams: « The floor surely allows for being very fast. […] I asked our aerodynamic engineers about it. They said there were interesting things they could analyze, particularly the direction of the airflow ».
The aerodynamic component is primarily one of the reasons for the team’s domination and performance since the beginning of the season. But Toto Wolff does not want to believe in this theory. For him, the Red Bull floor is complex and would not allow for significant improvement compared to Mercedes’ current one.
“What the engineers told me is that they were not convinced about the aesthetics, the beauty of the airflow, and more generally how it worked,” confided Toto Wolff.
No changes planned
Mercedes took time to find solutions this season regarding the aerodynamic problems of their car. The zero pontoon concept was abandoned and the floor was also modified before arriving in Spain. The Silver Arrows continued to struggle, notably with porpoising.
« Plot twists are no longer a topic of discussion. When it happened during the qualifying session of the Spanish Grand Prix, we immediately knew which direction we shouldn’t have taken. Now, we see support as well as more performance,” Toto Wolff testified.
