Mike Krack reveals the real reason for the order given to Fernando Alonso to conserve fuel
During the Canadian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso was advised to save fuel towards the end of the race, preventing him from attempting to catch up with Max Verstappen. With this "lift and coast" strategy, he even saw Lewis Hamilton dangerously closing in, but without consequences. Mike Krack reveals the real reason behind this order.

We thought for a moment that Lewis Hamilton could have overtaken Fernando Alonso towards the end of the race, but that was not the case. However, so far, Aston Martin’s request to its Spanish driver to save fuel remained unclear.
“We thought we had a problem with the fuel supply system. But we weren’t sure. As a precaution, we decided that the best thing to do was to save fuel and do lift and coast,” Mike Krack stated.
A practice that made Fernando Alonso lose time, both on Max Verstappen ahead and Lewis Hamilton behind. « How much does it cost us? It’s difficult to say. Maybe a few tenths, one or two per lap. »
« It was a precautionary measure. But you can choose between not finishing or arriving with a little more fuel, so we wanted to make sure. »
Alonso didn’t really know what was going on.
The order had left Alonso perplexed, as he wanted to try and catch up with Max Verstappen and go for the win. But he complied to avoid taking any risks. « I don’t really know. They didn’t tell me, so maybe it was to prevent me from worrying too much. But I don’t know. I felt that the car was in good condition. But I just followed the instructions. So yes, I hope it means that we have a little more pace. Next time, we will put more pressure on Max » said the Spanish driver. It’s more about caution than anything else.
Mike Krack finishes with a touch of humor: “I think we told Lewis that we had a brake problem, and we looked at each other and said, ‘oh, they know more about our car than we do, maybe we should talk to the Mercedes engineers.'”
