At the beginning, Formula 1 was predominantly European. But in recent years, new regions have emerged on the discipline’s calendar. This is notably the case in the Middle East, with numerous events taking place in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.

Faced with this high demand, the number of races is only increasing and there is no longer enough space for everyone. Adding to this, the states that give enormous sums of money compared to the smaller European countries, and you can see the problem. To ensure the continuity of the so-called historic Grand Prix races in Europe, Stefano Domenicali, current president of Formula 1, seems to be opting for a rotation system.

In Europe, I expect to see races where the principle of rotation could be applied. As for which races will be subject to rotation, there are already discussions with certain Grand Prix and it is something that we will formally clarify within the next two years, stated the Italian.

Of course, it is very important for historical races to have their own personality, he added, as he wishes to preserve certain Grand Prix.

Grand Prix that will need to get up to date

Stefano Domenicali wants more than anything for fans to have the best possible experience. For this reason, he is asking certain European Grand Prix races to modernize to avoid being dropped from the calendar. “Fans are coming with increasingly diverse needs. If you don’t give them what they deserve, it’s no longer historic, right?” he added.

The Formula 1 boss emphasizes the importance of circuit renovations in order to compete with the brand new layouts that appear on the calendar. Historic races will always be part of the calendar, but it is necessary for some of them to acknowledge the changes they need to make in terms of infrastructure, for example. This does not mean altering the layout of traditional races.
