Alex Palou always thinks about F1
The leader of the Indycar championship will find himself without a contract at the end of the year. The Spaniard sees Formula 1 as an option.
The Indycar championship welcomes drivers with a Formula 1 background. Romain Grosjean is the latest example of this. It is much rarer to see the opposite. This is what Spanish driver Alex Palou could potentially do.
The 2021 Indycar champion is leading the current standings of the American championship. The Spaniard will see his contract come to an end at the end of the year and could bounce back to Formula 1. The 26-year-old driver is the reserve driver for the McLaren team in F1. At the end of last season, the man behind the wheel of Chip Ganassi Racing had conducted practice sessions for the English team.
For now, the driver doesn’t know what his future is made of. Honestly, I don’t know either, but that day will come. Maybe in two months, three, four, I will know more.
For the driver, good results in Indycar will not necessarily offer him a place in Formula 1. « I don’t think that by winning more races, we will secure a seat in F1. I don’t believe that achieving different results will impact our season for next year », declared the Spaniard in a press conference.
« I already think that what we achieved in 2021 was a great accomplishment that I am truly happy about; winning my first championship in my second season in IndyCar. So I don’t think what we are doing this year is very different from what we did in 2021. So I don’t think that’s going to change that, », continues the championship leader.
After winning in the United States, Formula 1 remains in the back of Alex Palou’s mind, who could hope for a seat in the premier category of motor racing, even if the grid seems locked for new drivers.
