The FIA open to equalizing engine performance

Following the Commission held in Belgium, the FIA wishes to move towards engine performance equalization for the future. The FIA has analyzed the performance of the cars’ power units during the first half of 2023 and concluded that there is a significant performance gap between competitors, as stated in the press release. This year, Red Bull has a very high engine power, which is not the case for some teams like Alpine, who struggle to find performance. The goal of engine equalization is to level the playing field for everyone at this level.

Furthermore, the FIA recalls that this subject had already been at the center of the new regulations for 2022. « At the beginning of this regulatory cycle, it was agreed with power unit manufacturers that it would be possible to adjust engine performances starting from 2023 in order to avoid a significant performance gap not being allowed for an extended period. »

Thus, this Commission, which took place in Belgium, has advanced the dialogue on this issue, towards equalizing engine performance in the years to come. « The manufacturers of power units represented at the Commission have agreed to entrust the Advisory Committee on Power Units with the mandate to examine this subject and present proposals to it » is declared in the FIA press release. Formula 1 is slowly but surely moving towards equalizing power units.
