It’s a setback that he would have preferred to avoid. For the first Grand Prix of the second part of the season, Daniel Ricciardo couldn’t drive until the end of the weekend due to his hand injury suffered during free practice. After going off track at turn 3, he crashed into the barriers but did not manage to remove his hands from the steering wheel in time. As a result, he fractured a metacarpal bone in his left hand.

The Australian, who just had surgery on Sunday, gave an update on his social media. As usual, the AlphaTauri driver keeps smiling: “Hey everyone. I had surgery this morning, and for the first time, I received a metal piece (in my hand), so that’s pretty cool. I want to thank everyone who reached out to me and helped me stay positive. This is not a setback, it’s part of the comeback.”

A determined Daniel Ricciardo, who had made his return to Formula 1 just two races ago. This setback in his comeback process will make him miss the Italian Grand Prix next week, but Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, hinted that he could be back as early as Singapore, in three weeks.

The director of AlphaTauri, Franz Tost, has confirmed that Liam Lawson will be driving the AT04 in Monza.
