Hamilton feels that he can compete with Verstappen this weekend in Mexico

In Austin, Lewis Hamilton finished just a few seconds behind Max Verstappen. Closer than ever to the Dutch triple world champion, the Briton aims to aim for victory by the end of the season. According to him, Mexico could be the circuit to beat Red Bull.

This season, only Ferrari and Carlos Sainz have been able to beat Red Bull, winning the Singapore Grand Prix. Mercedes has been close to Red Bull’s pace many times since the beginning of the season. This was the case in Qatar, as evidenced by George Russell’s impressive comeback during the Grand Prix, as well as in Austin last week. However, in the United States, Mercedes may have made a mistake in their strategy, costing Hamilton valuable seconds that he would have needed to hope for a Grand Prix victory. Nevertheless, in Mexico City, the British driver is feeling confident and wants to do well.

A confident driver thanks to the superior performance of his single-seater car.

Alongside the Grand Prix weekend, Lewis Hamilton builds on a good performance in Austin and hopes to materialize or even do better in Mexico.

« I think we were close last year, so I hope we’ll be a little closer this weekend. If we adopt the right strategy this weekend, we might really be able to compete against them, he said. Last year, Hamilton finished 2nd in the Grand Prix, 15 seconds behind Max Verstappen but ahead of Sergio Pérez. Indeed, it is a circuit that suits the characteristics of the W14 fairly well.

Moreover, Lewis Hamilton seems satisfied with the upgrades made to his car, giving him a confidence boost to push the vehicle.

The step we took in Austin gave me the necessary confidence to push further, and I need more. It was a great feeling from the first lap, and I think that because of it, if it was a tenth of an improvement, I probably gained two tenths simply thanks to the extra confidence I was able to have throughout the race.

It is a conquering Hamilton who arrives in Mexico, ready to challenge Max Verstappen and attempt to win the Grand Prix on Sunday. The Dutchman is not completely confident about the performance of his Red Bull in Mexico: “If we look at the behavior of our car this year, with the low-speed corners and the bumps, our car is simply not very good,” he said. However, it is hard to believe the Dutchman: Red Bull has only let one race slip away so far this season.

A victorious end to the season?

Hamilton finishes by rejoicing in this Grand Prix in Mexico as well as the upcoming one in Brazil, a circuit also favorable to the Silver Arrows as it was there in 2022 that George Russell clinched his first victory in Formula 1.

“And then Brazil was a great circuit for us last year, and if it turns out that we are again closer, then these are two great races for us,” he concluded.
