It's disappointment at McLaren. After promising tests, Lando Norris did no better than a 19th time in Q1. The British driver takes responsibility for his premature elimination.

McLaren experienced a harsh reality check in Mexico. Lando Norris, who had been on a streak of four consecutive podium finishes, failed to make it out of Q1. The British driver had been consistently performing well in the three practice sessions following Austin. However, due to his qualifying results, Norris only achieved the 19th fastest lap time.

During Q1, the McLaren driver switched to intermediate tires but with little success. For his second attempt, the mechanics put on red tires for him, but Norris didn’t manage to make it into the top 15 for Q2. The 23-year-old driver didn’t get a third chance due to yellow flags caused by Fernando Alonso’s off-track excursion in the first sector.

Despite his lack of understanding regarding the interruption of his first lap, he takes full responsibility for his poor performance during his last attempt. “I was ordered to come in for some reason, but the pace was good,” Norris said. “Something obviously wasn’t right, but it wasn’t a problem. I simply made mistakes on my one lap. Of course, there were yellow flags at the end because of Fernando. So there you have it, this one opportunity, this one lap that I had, I didn’t succeed. I made a mistake, and that’s it.”

18th on the starting grid

During the session, Lando Norris was called on the radio. His team asked him to come back to the pit before the end of his first attempt at the beginning of the session. After a few minutes in the garage, the McLaren team driver returned to the track with thinner tires. Despite this event, the McLaren driver is convinced that he should have done better and qualified for Q2. “We turned around and came back directly to the track. We will discuss it later, but I had only one chance, and I didn’t seize it, so it’s my fault,” he added.

Despite his 19th time in FP1, Lando Norris will start from the 18th position on the grid. Logan Sargeant had his time canceled for not respecting track limits, and Yuki Tsunoda had an engine change. These two drivers will therefore start behind Norris.
