Crash between Ocon and Alonso in Q1 of the sprint shootout, Ocon is out (Video)
Big Alpine accident caused by a misunderstanding with Fernando Alonso. Ocon is out in Q1 of the shootouts. The Aston Martin is being repaired in its box while waiting for the resumption of qualifications, halted by the red flag.
Esteban Ocon exited on the tow truck at Interlagos even before the end of the first part of the qualifying shootout, the Saturday sprint race. The Alpine driver collided with Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin, which was in a rather inconvenient position on the deceleration lap just after the Senna esses.
The FIA has opened an investigation regarding this incident that caused the red flag in Q1 of the sprint shootout qualifying, 33 seconds before the end of the session. Ocon was on a fast lap, qualifying 16th, and he was supposed to improve his time. On the other hand, Fernando Alonso had just completed his lap and was decelerating. Informed by the radio about Ocon’s arrival, Alonso shifted away from the racing line but not enough to avoid the Alpine approaching at full speed. Estéban Ocon took the kerb and slightly deviated from his usual line to avoid losing grip. This required him to use more space than the usual racing line. As Fernando Alonso was only slightly off the racing line, he found himself in the path of the Alpine, and both drivers couldn’t avoid contact.
The Alpine directly broke its rear right suspension and went on to hit the tire wall from the back. Alonso, on the other hand, experienced a breakage in his front left suspension.
