Pirelli and F1 will work on 2025 tires to optimize the spectacle and overtaking
While Pirelli has renewed its exclusive tire supplier contract with F1 until 2027, the Italian company has announced that it will launch the development of a tire to address the teams' complaints.

Pirelli wants to address the overheating issues by studying a new tire concept, where drivers can push while allowing for various pit stop strategies. The aerodynamic developments by the teams have led to complaints regarding how easily the tires overheat due to the alteration of the airflow.
Mario Isola, Director of Pirelli Motorsport, knows which aspects of his tires need to be reworked, but he wants to remind everyone that without high levels of tire degradation, there is no reason to aim for a race with two pit stops. However, he also believes that most of the on-track action is due to tire degradation and how it is managed. If you reduce that, I am convinced that there is a risk of having a train of cars. Because if you can attack on the track, I can too, and so can everyone else.
Pirelli will work closely with Formula 1 and the teams to advance research on this point, as their own simulators, which predict strategies, do not take into account the effects of driving in traffic.
What we want to understand is how we can modify the action on the track and reduce tire degradation. Developing a tire with a different wear level is an option for the future. But it is important to understand if there are any unforeseen consequences in this regard, explains Isola in a press conference.
It is important that we clarify in advance this type of objectives for the future. We need to understand what is good for the sport, taking into account the advice and comments of the riders, but for the sake of the sport. We take into consideration the advice and comments of the pilots, but we also do what is best for the benefit of the sport.
The design and range of tire compounds for 2024 have already been defined and set. Therefore, any changes will only begin in 2025.
