Haas is going to attempt an unprecedented strategy, having “nothing to lose” anymore

Haas has introduced some updates in Austin, but the drivers have different opinions. In Vegas, Kevin Magnussen, who likes the new version, will start with the latest adjustments, while Nico Hülkenberg chooses the previous version.

Haas is caught in a downward spiral. The American team has failed to score any points in the constructor standings since the Singapore Grand Prix, where Kevin Magnussen secured one point back in September. Since then, Haas has been experiencing a true drought and currently occupies last place in the championship, with only a mere 12 points accumulated by its two drivers.

The improvements made throughout the year have not proven to be very convincing. The performance has never really evolved. The only notable changes were observed in Austin, but they were more about the aesthetics of the cars than their performance.

Contrasting sensations

The Haas team is uncertain about its progress, and this uncertainty reflects the season. Since the United States Grand Prix, Nico Hülkenberg has been complaining about the discomfort of his car. He even stated that he feels more confident in the previous version of the race car… As a result, Haas has decided to revert to the old settings for its driver at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. However, within the team, opinions are divided. Despite two retirements in the last three races, Kevin Magnussen has explained that he feels better in this new version.

Faced with these divergent feelings, the American company has opted for an individualized approach. The main reason behind this decision is that Nico believes that the old specifications suit him better, whereas it’s the opposite for Kevin, stated Günther Steiner. We have decided to give them what they prefer. We have two races left and nothing to lose, so we did what we could. We could discuss data collection, but we have enough. It is a decision based on each driver’s preferences more than any other aspect. This puts them in a comfortable position so that they are as satisfied as possible with the car they receive.

Making a good impression at home

Haas will compete in a third Grand Prix on their home turf. The race in Miami had been relatively favorable for the American team, as Kevin Magnussen scored a point in the race. However, on the Circuit of the Americas, the race had been complicated.

« I find it fantastic to have three races in the United States, especially as an American team,” rejoiced the Italian director. « Five or ten years ago, who would have imagined that there would be more than one race in the United States? Now, we have three, and they are all very different events. I think it’s beneficial for Formula 1 and for the American fans who come in large numbers to watch and support. What strikes me is the difference between each race. You go to Austin, a more “traditional” race with many loyal fans, and then you go to Miami, the heart of the party. We’ll see what Vegas has in store for us.

Before the last Grand Prix of the season in the United States, Haas is four points behind Alfa Romeo.
